The Anaheim Ducks owners wanted to create a space that would broaden the reach of ice sports in Southern California. Irvine’s new Great Park Ice & FivePoint Arena became the answer to their aspiration. While the sports complex serves as the primary training facility for the local National Hockey League team, the space acts as a community center that provides public recreational and educational amenities.

The large structure comprises an interior concourse, a pub, and at its center stand four state-of-the-art ice rinks—one of which meets Olympic standards and serves as the primary training facility for the US Figure Skating team. Architect LPA accommodated a faster completion date by integrating two connected pre-engineered metal structures into the design.

In lieu of the prescriptive code requirements from the California Building Code, Holmes Fire provided structural fire engineering services to justify the omission of spray-applied fireproofing to the primary structural members at the roof of the building. This performance-based design utilizes an advanced structural fire analysis (SAFIR) to demonstrate that fireproofing omission at the roof level meets code requirements. This approach saved the client substantial labor and materials costs, and provided an equivalent level of safety for both building occupants and first responders.
